iScript 33: GUI Scripting E-mail
Sunday, 19 April 2009

In episode 33 of the iScript Netcast we take a beginning view into the world of GUI scripting and AppleScript. We discuss how to begin using it and also are given a warning for when we should use it. Hopefully this will answer some of the questions which I have been receiving in regards to GUI scripting.

I know that there were many requests for this episode to be video and perhaps it should have been. However, this was all that time would allow me to do this week. Hopefully we will be getting some more video episodes in the near future!

And, as promised, to download the scripts used in this episode of the iScript Netcast, click here and "save target as..."!

2 things to notice:

- The page you mention about Apple's GUI scripting ()
doesn't seem to exist anymore. The link given in the podcast gets you to Apple's
"All applications and utilities" page. If you are interested in
AppleScript GUI scripting, you should go to this page :
Unfortunately, you'll
notice that there is no direct link to Apple's UIElementInspector mentioned in
this podcast. Apple prefers to advertize for a third-party 55-dollar utility:
Prefab's UI Browser. (By the way, the link Apple gives to Prefab software is
wrong: you should try this one instead: . This app hasn't been updated since
July 2007.
If you wish to download UIElementInspector (for free), you can find
it here: .

- On my PowerBook, the shortcut to lock UIElement is cmd-F7. Laptop
computer users are reminded to add the function (fn) key to that shortcut to do
that: cmd+fn+F7.
